how much does evolution rock?

Snail-Eating Caterpillar Discovered in Hawaii:

"The caterpillars inhabit predominantly native wet and rain forests in the Hawaiian Islands and maintain a strict diet of native snails. They are very specific eaters and will not accept foliage, even if starving. Because the snail’s shell presents a challenge, the caterpillar has learned to utilize its silk in a spider-like fashion to immobilize its prey. Although all caterpillars have the ability to produce silk to form cocoons, this is the first record of a predatory caterpillar which uses silk to catch live prey."

Bioluminescence

Allen took me to Torrey Pines, a beautiful beach in San Diego. I think it is near La Jolla, but I could be wrong. It was a great day; sushi at Yummy Box, 1lb. Chocolate bar (milk chocolate with almonds) quad espresso with three shots of white mocha on the rocks. Anyhow, Red tide is much too magical for words. With every step you take, the beach floor lights beneath you. In the darkness of the late evening, and not much light pollution, this makes for an amazing scene. The tide is lit bright blue at every break. We also went to Mt. Soledad. The entirety of San Diego and beyond is visible from there. The moon was huge, full and red. Amazing! Ahh, I love nights like that!

More on red tide:

SO, for those of you who do not know this already, Comic Con is the Mecca for geeks; the largest comic book gathering in the world, or at least that’s what I was told. Being that Allen is a colorist, it is only natural that I would show up and be supportive, interested, etc. I was forewarned of how unpleasant it is, i.e., smells, heat, crowds. Surprisingly, it was really not that bad. I would say my first experience was pleasant. I have a professional pass (I started flatting for the boys) so I got to hang out in the uber cool “Industry Lounge”. It is only uber cool because it is nearly vacant and they have free coffee, tea, and other yummy beverages.

Actually, the coolest thing happened. I felt like an idiot, but I am recovered now and ready to share the experience. Here I go:

So, Allen works with David Baron. They color comic books like Authority, Batman, Justice League of America, and others, I think. Well, David and Allen have a table at the Con. As the two sat sketching various characters for their fans (uh hum), David looks at me, gestures to a guy standing just in front of us and says, “Camie, take a picture of that guy in the glasses.” I'm like, well, okay. Why not? Maybe he’s a friend, or something. So, I take a few shots no big deal, right? David sits next to me and says, “Did you get some shots?” I said, yes, who is he? At that point, David points to his belt buckle and says, with a disgusted, disbelieving glare, “Um, hello!” I still didn’t understand. All the time I'm thinking, okay David, your belt buckle is cool and everything, but if you’re excited about the person who designed or made your belt…well, that’s just weird. Then….he says, “NO, the Misfits……that is Glenn Danzig…You know, the singer from Misfits!” I am suddenly reminded of how much I fucking loved the Misfits as a young hoodlum …Thought I was sooo punk rock. Anyhow. In retrospect, it was probably rude of me to just snap picture after picture of him like the damn paparazzi…but in my defense…I didn't even know who he was. SO THERE! I feel better now. Oh yeah, and the comic book artist sitting next to our table, he talked to Danzig for like fifteen minutes. He didn't recognize him either. In fact, Danzig was apparently a fan of the comic book artist…..

I'm heading back there in a few minutes. Allen has friends coming in from Modesto…I just came back to the apartment to pick up the messiness that is an artists apartment. Three guys…plus Allen and I….in our tiny apartment. This will make for a particularly interesting weekend. Back to the CON!!!!!

first i must sprinkle you with fairy dust

For all of you who thrive on discovering new and tantalizing religions.......here ya go....this one is probably the most interesting, or entertaining, I have come across in years (since scientology). Discovered via "drawing down the moon"......

(post script) for those of you who don't know me well, I get my jollies researching and dissecting religions. Know of any good ones? Make my day and introduce me to a new one………

F-U-N spells fun!

(post, post script) I respect ALL religions, and believe that individuals should worship or praise or follow, or study any religion or non-religion they feel most akin to. period.

notsoproductiveartnight

I am sitting at the weekly art night in SD, but I can't be creative. I am trying...but nothing comes. I think its because I have to go back to Modesto. Don't get me wrong, there are great things about Modesto, but the icky's make me forget about the aforementioned great things I can't remember at this moment because the icky's are taking over...ah. Well....I want to make a zombie for an art show in June. I have a decent concept, its the talent I lack. Well, I must return to my non-productive, pencil tapping, empty page, sitting-amongst-wonderful-artists-who-are-just-wonderful, art night.

just a little rant

How do you sleep at night? Very well, I am assured, in a comfortable safe bed, without the thoughts of your children, brothers, fathers, uncles, and friends dying in the name of this 'Great Nation'. Great nation, yes maybe, if no one was forced to think it is okay to kill for a man who was mediocre in college, and speaks in absence of connotation! One who can not articulate the so-called 'imperative' drive for fortification! We understand the need to be protected, but I for one am willing to use bipedalism in exchange for this petroleum entrenched war that has already taken unnecessary lives.

Sorry.....I was just thinking about a good friend whom I just learned will be returning to Iraq. This will be his third time. I am very upset.....
